As weird as it would have seemed yesterday, being a plain girl isn’t that bad. Maybe it’s that he’s been a fat, nerdy girl and then an anime girl and then briefly a bimbo cheerleader. After all of those extremes, it’s nice just being somewhat normal. Though it was a little off-putting to have no one looking at him when they got back to the harbor. While it’s good no one was giggling at him, it kinda sucked being completely ignored.

“You all right?” Paula asks.

“I was just thinking,” he says.

“That must be unusual,” she says, but then she smiles so he knows it’s a joke.

“It’s just I’m so used to being the center of attention. I mean, I was the quarterback. The star. Then Benny made me a freak and I was a star for the wrong reason. But then back there, no one really paid any attention to me. It was weird. Not entirely bad, though.”

“Being normal would be weird to you.”

“And now you’re the one who’s not normal,” he says.

“I don’t really know what I am,” she says. “I don’t feel different.”

“You can just turn me into whatever you want.”

“That’s not all that useful.”

“I’m sure you can do something else. It would be really weird if you only had the power to change me.”

“It really would be weird,” she says. “I’m not sure how I can test it.”

“Probably shouldn’t while you’re driving.”

She smiles at him again. “If you hadn’t told me, I never would have thought you were Scott Kartje. He was always such an asshole and you’re not. Maybe it’s losing all that testosterone.”

“I don’t know. Maybe this is how I’d have been if I’d been born a girl.”

“Maybe we could have been friends then.”

“What about Benny?”

“The three of us could have been friends,” she says. “I bet you would have had all the best toys, but your mom probably would have only gotten you girls toys.”

“And dressed me in frilly pink dresses all the time,” he says. His dad was really happy to have a boy, but he’s sure his mom would have liked a little girl to spoil. “You think I could have gotten into Melanie’s posse like this?”

“I doubt it. Maybe if your mom got you implants and a makeover.”

He giggles and yet he can see Mom doing that to make her little girl popular. She probably would have been one of those moms on Toddlers and Tiaras, entering him into beauty pageants and having him made up like a tiny whore. Maybe he’s lucky to have been born a guy even if he had been an asshole to a lot of people.

Paula parks across the street, hiding the car behind the building so Benny won’t see it. He realizes the problem when they get there and he tries the door. “I don’t have my key,” he says. “Benny probably has it.”

“It’s all right,” Paula says, patting his shoulder. “We can hide in the bushes.”

“In the dirt?”

She giggles at that. “You afraid of getting a little dirty?”

“I just got these jeans.
